Marinara Sauce

8 oz. can of Hunts® tomato sauce
6 oz. can of Contadina® tomato paste
6 oz. can of water (or ¾ cup of white* or red wine)
1 small onion chopped
1 teaspoon of garlic powder (or two cloves of garlic minced)
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil
black pepper

Sauté onions in extra virgin olive oil in a large saucepan until onions are translucent (softened). Add remaining ingredients and reduce heat to a low simmer. Stir gently until all ingredients are incorporated. Cover with lid and simmer for 10 minutes.

Try adding…

  • 14.5 oz. can of Aldi’s Sliced Stewed Tomatoes* (Break tomatoes up with a wooden spoon for a chunkier sauce or puree with an emersion blender for a smoother sauce.)
  • Use Vidalia onions for a sweeter sauce or Spanish onions for a heartier sauce)
  • 1 small green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon basil pesto
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chopped basil
  • 1 pinch red pepper flakes
  • Parmesan cheese
  • 1 lb. 95% lean ground beef or turkey
  • 1 pkg. cooked sliced sweet or hot Italian sausage

This is my mother’s recipe. While the sauce was simmering on the stove, Mom would place one side of a slice of soft white bread on top of the sauce and let us eat it as a treat. Delicious!
